Younger workers in workforce in record numbers

Study by the Institute for Work and Health finds 50% of Ontario youths aged 12 - 14 have jobs; 42% in BC

From the Canadian Press article:

Research led by Dr. Curtis Breslin at the Toronto-based Institute for Work and Health found work-related injuries among 12-to 14-year-olds happened at rates comparable to that for 15-to 24-year- olds.

"Consistently it surprises people," Breslin said of his findings.

Breslin's study was based on school surveys done in 2003 and 2005 in Ontario and B.C. and involved responses from more than 1,300 students.

The results show improved tracking of younger workers is needed and that they should be included in the Canadian Labour Force Survey, Breslin said.

"The cutoff of 15 looks quite arbitrary when you start looking at how much work the 12-to 14-year-olds are engaged in," he said.
