All Ontario contractors will be required to pay WSIB premiums by 2012

Small firms up in arms about the cost; claim it is prohibitive

Toronto Star article:

Independent construction firms in Ontario will be required to pay for workplace insurance starting in 2012, a move critics warn will put many contractors out of business.

A government bill forcing firms to pay premiums to the Workplace Safety and Insurance Board passed 64 to 19 in the Legislature yesterday. The legislation has drawn fire from the opposition and small business groups, who accused the government of giving little thought to how it will affect small firms.

"This is absolutely horrific for small business," said Catherine Swift, president of the Canadian Federation of Independent Business. "This particular bill only affects construction, but small businesses in other sectors are saying, `when is this coming for me?'"

Many firms already have private insurance, and will now face an additional burden during hard economic times, she said, adding that research has shown the WSIB premiums would cost the average independent contractor about $11,000 annually.
