A government bill forcing firms to pay premiums to the Workplace Safety and Insurance Board passed 64 to 19 in the Legislature yesterday. The legislation has drawn fire from the opposition and small business groups, who accused the government of giving little thought to how it will affect small firms. "This is absolutely horrific for small business," said Catherine Swift, president of the Canadian Federation of Independent Business. "This particular bill only affects construction, but small businesses in other sectors are saying, `when is this coming for me?'"
