Preventing musculoskeletal disorders in the workplace

WSIB provides resources on its website to combat musculoskeletal disorders in the workplace. The resources guide employers to assess and develop solutions to prevent musculoskeletal disorders.

On WSIB's website there are a number of great tools that employers can use to assess musculoskeletal disorders (also known as repetitive strain injuries), and a number of great resources on how to put practices that will prevent musculoskeletal disorders can also be found. These resources can be found by following the link below.

The first resource found in the toolbox is a document titled "Part 3A: Getting Started". This resource outlines the process on how to prevent musculoskeletal disorders in the workplace and what can result from not addressing musculoskeletal disorders in the workplace. The resource includes basic information about MSD hazards as well as tools that can be used to recognize jobs with MSD hazards, conduct a MSD risk assessment, and to identify and select MSD hazard controls.

The second resource titled: "Part 3B: Beyond basics" contains sections on strengthening your foundation for success with MSD prevention, ways to recognize MSD hazards, workers/staff surveys, an approach to an in-depth MSD risk assessment. The second resource is a great one as it provides you with the surveys.? One of particular interest is the? worker discomfort survey, an east-to-do survey that allows? workers to communicate their discomfort pertaining to their specific job/task.

The third resource titled: "Part 3C: More on In-depth Risk Assessment Methods" provides a more in-depth look at MSD risk assessments. Some of the content that can be found in this document are: a checklist risk assessment methods, manual material handling risk assessment methods, upper limb risk assessment methods, combined/whole body assessment methods, and computer- based risk assessment methods.

These resources can be found here.
