Healthy workplace best for bottom line

Halifax Metro News article on The benefits of putting in wellness programs in the workplace.

An economic downturn makes many companies believe that it would not be wise to invest in a wellness program. However, it is important to keep the workplace psychologically healthy and the benefits to employers and staff are numerous. Mentally healthy employees are more productive, take fewer sick days, and it reduces turnover and decreases the cost of recruitment.

With the word layoff often heard in Canada, employees are under a great deal of stress both at home and in the workplace. One affects the other and vice versa, creating a snowball effect.

Some easy to implement ideas to improved your workplace conditions include:

  • open-door policies,
  • seeking employee feedback, and
  • offering flextime.

An example: The College of Physicians and Surgeons of Nova Scotia offers a lunch and learn series on health and wellness, flextime and summer hours, professional leave, and helps workers quit smoking. The college also offers free and confidential psychological services, tuition reimbursement, fitness allowances, and cross-training opportunities.

When employers invest in their employees, employees feel motivated and dedicated to work harder in order to thank their organization for their generosity, and when employees are motivated and dedicated there is an improvement in productivity.
