Violence a problem in the workplace, study shows

A study conducted in New Zealand shows that workplace violence is a problem.

Researchers approached human resources departments of 62 organizations.  Respondents reported 143 cases of employees being physically assaulted in the workplace in the previous year and 254 attempted assaults.  Two-thirds of respondents reported no cases of violence, meaning the majority of attacks were on healthcare and passenger transport workers.

A survey on the incidence of violence in the workplace has indicated that one in three employers have had problem with their staff being attacked or assaulted in the past year.

Healthcare workers, like doctors and nurses, and passenger transport workers reported most number of incidents.

The study showed that workload and stress were higher risk factors than physical factors such as cash on the premises.  Alcohol or drugs, mental instability and prejudice or harassment were identified as the main issues leading to workplace violence.

The University’s Healthy Work Group was the first to conduct a study on workplace violence and concluded that that more research needs to be done to identify how to deal with the problem.

One of the researchers involved in the study stated that there is a big problem and businesses do not understand the problem or the need to report it effectively. He also states that there is a level of awareness in organizations where they have had a lot of problems in the past, but everyone must address this issue.
