Welcoming WellnessResearch on work/life balance programs and the statistics that
prove its a wise investment.
Today, employees face many stressors like role overload, work and family
interference, and caregiver strain. Organizations should put benefit plans in place that will help employees
proactively address employee health and wellness. Tangible measurements of the effectiveness of workplace wellness programs are under-investigated in many organizations. There has been research done that suggests that low-cost, high-value proactive work/life programming exists and can produce long-term results. One of these approaches is group coaching-based work/life programming. The impact of this type of programming was measured. An eight-week tele-learning class was developed and delivered to a group of employees in Western Canada as a pilot project. The initiative’s purpose was to look at low work/life balance scores on an internal effectiveness survey and to look at the effects of work/life training on individual and organizational productivity. The group was made up of men and women from a global pharmaceutical company, all the participants of the group had mid-level positions and were located in several different cities. The participants used an online stress management too, each participant measured his or her own level of stress prior to the eight-week program and then again after the program was completed. Before the program started, the men and women responded to surveys with questions about their perceptions of their work/life balance, levels of engagement and management behavior in upholding organizational principles of work/life balance. Pre-program, 38% of participants agreed that in the past year they had thought about looking for a position somewhere else in order to deal with work/life balance challenges. Post- program, 86% of participants reported a high or extremely high level of engagement in the company. About 84% of participants felt that their productivity had increased and 86% agreed that they had developed concrete strategies to balance work and personal life. Numbers also went up for people who felt that they could do their jobs without conflict with their personal lives. The program had a positive effect on stress indicators. For instance, there was a 28% increase in healthy habits (increasing amounts of sleep and exercise and improving nutrition), a 22% decrease in overall stress and a 14% increase in psychological well-being. These statistics prove that there is a relationship between work/life conflict and employee wellness. An individual’s work life and personal life are interdependent, one has an effect on the other and vice versa. Company programs must meet the changing work/life demands of the organization and its employees. Besides implementing work-life programs, employers can increase perceived flexibility and management support, introduce cafeteria-style benefit packages, and facilitate job- sharing and reduce workweeks when appropriate. Employers could provide programs that teach employees the skills they need to better manage their work/life conflicts.
