Out of Balance

Employers, employees put different weight on the work-life balance scale.
Photo:supplementsResearch shows there are differences between employers and their workers when it comes to work-life offerings.

Research from the Corporate Executive Board shows that when asked about satisfaction with the company’s work-life offerings, there were three times as more human resource executives who were satisfied compared to the number of actual employees who were satisfied.

Companies who help workers find the right balance do not suffer productivity losses.

About one-third of employees say their work effort suffers as they struggle to meet personal commitments.

The findings from the research also show differences between the way men and women struggle to solve work-life problems.

About 64% of women rank flexible hours as a top-five work-life consideration when assessing a potential employer, 63% of men say the same.

Men and women agree that about the importance of flexible work hours.  However, they differ when it comes to ideas about how to solve work-life problems.

About 26% of men believe that telecommuting is an effective solution to work-life problems, while only 20% of women have the same belief. For men telecommuting is a top-five consideration.

On the other hand, 14% of women to say the ability to switch between full-time and part-time is important when considering a position, 4% of men say the same.

Approximately 30% of all employees say they are reducing their effort at work in order to better meet personal commitments.

38% of employees with children, and 32% of workers in a dual-career household say they do the same.
