Hiding Injuries Rewards Companies

Star investigation reveals job safety numbers are under-reported, cutting employer cost

A Toronto Star has recently investigated the number of under-reported workplace injuries.

Recently the government has put out a full fledged effort to promote workplace safety, however, workplaces are hiding workplaces injuries that they can be rewarded.

Toronto Star reporter Andrew Bailey analyzed about 650 000 worker injuries and illnesses between 2000 and 2007.

The investigation has found that since 2000, organizations have reported thousands of employees as being seriously injured, but not having missed work.

Some of the tactics organizations use to hide workplace injuries are pressuring/bribing workers not to report major injuries at all, paying the wounded full salary to do degrading make-work jobs, or lying to make injuries look less serious.

Organizations do this because the fast the organization gets an injured worker back to work, or back from “loss time”, the lower the insurance premium is.

When organizations shorten loss time or avoid reporting altogether it can lead to a rebate cheque from the WSIB.

Here is a summary of the about 3 000 examples of serious injuries being reported as resulting in zero “days lost”:

Fracture – 905
Intracranial injuries – 323
Crushing injuries – 220
Dislocations – 205
Concussions – 163
Fingertip amputations – 34
Asbestosis – 14
Third-degree heat burns – 6
Silicosis – respiratory disease
Heart failure – 1
Blood poisoning – 1
Miscarriage – 1

The star also interviewed two workers who have personally experienced their employers asking them to hide their injury or disability.
