Nurturing spirituality in the workplace

Less about formal religion than about helping people find worth in work they do.

The economic recession has caused many people to question their job security, to feel disappointed, and to try to do more with less.

Many are trying to find a new meaning and purpose for their lives. Some are turning to their employers to seek comfort, they are raising their levels of spirituality in the workplace.

For a long time workplaces have been cautious to deal with spiritual needs of employees because they feared it was too close to religion, says Vince Brewerton of St. Mary's University in Halifax.

The word spirituality means different things to different people. In the workplace it is not about religion, but about helping people find value in the work they do. Spirituality helps a person lead a meaningful life in sync with the individual's values.

Recently there has a request for on site spiritual programs like meditation, yoga, and tai chi.

Organizations taking a holistic approach to employee wellbeing are noticing they are boosting employee satisfaction, loyalty, resiliency, retention, recruitment and the organization's sustainability.
