Most smokers worldwide support workplace bans: poll

Even smokers support bans to prohibit lighting up in the workplace, according to a new survey.
A new survey was done with about 5 000 people.  The survey was conducted by RTI International and Harris Interactive.

The intent of the survey was to gather opinions from workers about prohibiting smoking in the workplace.

The survey found that approximately 75% of workers who smoke and 87% of employers do support bans on workplace smoking.

"Although there was widespread variations among countries, overall the results demonstrate global support for workplace smoking bans," said Michael Halpern, of RTI who is one of the authors of the report.

This survey supports the notion that more programs and policies are needed to support employees who want to quit smoking.

Respondents were also asked about the amount of time they spent smoking, but most employees did not think that their smoking habits had a negative financial impact on the organization.

According to the World Health Organization smoking is a leading cause of preventable death.  Approximately 200 000 workers die each year due to exposure of smoke at work.
