Study Details Impact of Workplace Musculoskeletal Disorders on European UnionThe
case for addressing MSDs in the workplace.
A new study shows that Europe could improve its economy if it addresses
workplace musculoskeletal disorders (WMSDs).The study, “Fit for Work? Musculoskeletal Disorders in the European Workforce”, was done by The Work Foundation. The study found about 100 million workers suffer from work-related chronic musculoskeletal pain, and about 40% of these individuals have quit their job because of their pain. This represents about 2% of the EU’s annual GDP ($400 billion). Appropriate and effective interventions can reduce the financial burden and improve employee performance. Having a situation where Europe’s working age population is temporarily or permanently unable to work through ill-health “can reduce the aggregate level of labor productivity in an economy and damage the competitiveness and effectiveness of private and public sector organizations.” Basically it is not only an economic problem, but a problem for the competitive value of an organization. The study is evidence of the major impact MSDs having on businesses and on a country’s economy. Approximately 1 in 6 European workers have a health issue or disability that affects their ability to work. MSDs are one of the major reasons that account for employees taking sick days. The study found that about 40 million workers in Europe are living with a MSD because of their work, having a major impact on their quality of life and work. If work environment are designed carefully and flexible work arrangements are provided to employees this can retain employees and be a method for phased return to work.
