U.S. job satisfaction hits 22-year low

Survey investigates job satisfaction among Americans.
Photo: not engagedThe Conference Board survey has revealed that only 45% of Americans are satisfied with their jobs.

The survey involved polling 5 000 households.  In 1987 when the survey was first conducted 61.1% were satisfied with their jobs.  Other percentages that have dropped include:  interest in work which dropped 18.9% and job security which dropped 17.5%.

The survey also found that about 25% of respondents did not expect to be at their current job in a year.

Over the past 20 years, during both good and bad economic times, job satisfaction rates have been decreasing.

Decrease in job satisfaction has a domino effect, affecting employee engagement and in turn affecting productivity.

Although there have been improvements in the work environment (decrease in workplace hazards and increased vacation days) job satisfaction has continued to decrease.
