It is official: Workplace interferes with personal lifeAs many as 50 per cent of
people bring their work home with them regularly, according to a new study.
A national survey of 1 800 American workers
was done. Questions about work interfering with home life and how often it happens were asked to
participants. The study found that approximately half of the participants answered ‘sometimes’ or ‘frequently’. The findings are an indication of the negative health impacts this could have. People with college or postgraduate degrees were those who reported that their work interfered with their personal life. Professionals made up the most of the participants who reported that work interfered with their personal life. Some indicators of employees taking their work home are: interpersonal conflict at work, job insecurity, noxious environments, and high-pressure situations. Job-related resources are also indicators of employees taking work home, job authority, job skill level, decision-making latitude, and personal earnings are some. There is an association with increased work hours and work interference. The association is stronger among people who have some or full control their work schedule. In a nut shell, those who are educated, professionals, and those with job-related resources reported higher levels of work interference. Researchers referred to this as ‘the stress of higher status’. Although many benefits come to those with higher status positions there are flaws with it as well, work-life balance is one.
