H1N1 takes its toll on Canadian workplace productivity

Productivity decreases in the workplace as Canadians miss work due to H1N1.
Photo: flu season According to Statistics Canada in November due to the flu more than one million Canadians missed work.

The productivity loss in November is similar to when Ontario and parts of the U.S lost power in the summer of 2003.

The numbers indicate that Canadians are following advice from public health officials who have told them to stay home if they feel sick.

Approximately 1.5 million people missed out on 19.6 hours of work each because they were either sick or had to take care of an immediate family member with H1N1 or the flu.

Canadian aged 15 to 69 lost a total of just under 30 million hours.

Canadians who were between the ages of 30 and 44 had the highest absenteeism rate out of all the age groups.

Women missed work more often than men.

In November the number of employees with children lost twice the amount hours in comparison to those without children.

According to Statistics Canada, to make up for those who were away from their jobs employees did overtime.  Approximately 600 000 people did 8.6 million hours of overtime in November.
