Scaffold deaths prompt probe of workplace safety laws

Panel of safety experts, labour groups, employers and academics to recommend changes by next fall
Several developments and increased awareness have come out as a result of the Christmas Eve scaffold accident.

Developments include the Ontario government conducting an independent investigation into lax labor, workplace safety and enforcement laws.

Tony Dean, a public servant, will head a panel of safety experts, labor groups, employers, academics to propose changes which should roll out by next fall.

For a long time union leaders and labor activists have pointed out the lack of proper health and safety measures in the workplace.

When poor enforcement is combined with the increased use of cheap migrant workers the number of accidents will increase.

One of the tasks of the panel will be to research best practices  in workplace safety around the nation and world.

In particular, the panel will look into the variety of safety practices that can be utilized in the workplace, entry level safety training, the impact of the underground economy on health and safety, and existing flaws in labor laws.
