Nurses say violence `part of the job`

Study reveals workplace violence nurses experience.

A study was recently published by the Journal of Clinical Nursing.  The study involved the participation of 113 nurses who were mostly female and in their early 40s.

The study found that approximately 75% of those who provide private and public care suffer workplace violence.

Many nurses also do not report incidents that happen at work because they think it comes with the job.  Only one in six report the incident.

Main findings:

-52% had been physically assaulted

-92% were verbally abused

-69% had been physically threatened.

-2534 incidents were reported to the research team

-each year nurses face an average of 2 to 46 incidents

-on average nurses were abused once a week; 27% were abused every month while 35% were abused every six months

-40% experienced an incident involving a weapon

-the number and reason for the incidents were dependent on the department

Researchers hope to further investigate the findings as the sample size was small for this study.
