Supportive workplace key to mental health

CAMH study: helping employees overcome a mental illness.
The Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH) carried out a study with 10 000 workers employed at a large Canadian employer.  The study found that the strongest predictor of workplace disability leaves was the person’s history of occurrences.

Findings showed that employees who have a history of physical disability were twice as likely to take disability leave again.  On the other hand, those with a mental illness were seven times more likely to face it again.

The study stated that the difference is due to the ideology around mental illnesses and in turn the lack of resources available for employees to deal with it.   The study proves that it is important for employers to provide resources and support on a continuous basis for employees.

It is also important to remember that when addressing mental illness treatment a holistic approach needs to be taken. Proper follow-up care and medication, counseling, social support from love ones and the workplace are all apart of a proper holistic approach.
