Employers change wellness tactics (US)

Benefits magazine article on the current trends in measuring wellness ROI

From the article (based on Hewitt's annual healthcare trends survey):

  • More than half of survey respondents (53%) said they would measure changes in employees’ health behaviour to gauge their wellness progress within the next three to five years.
  • At present, the majority (58%) determines their progress by medical costs; and 57% gauge it by how many employees are using the programs. Only 19% currently track behaviour changes.
  • Total health costs per employee—including employer costs, employee payroll contributions and out of pocket expenses—rose from US$4, 793 in 2001 to $11,058 in 2010, the survey found.
  • In just a year, the percentage of employers turning to incentives rose from 35% (in 2009) to 63% this year. Of those, 37% offered cash incentives and 24% offered incentives to employees’ family members.
  • Less than half (42%) report having a formal healthcare plan or policy.
