Study: Osteoarthritis Carries High Costs in Missed Work DaysWork absences due to
osteoarthritis cost U.S. employers more than $10 billion per year, according a study in the March Journal of Occupational and
Environmental Medicine.
A large national database was used to determine the impact of osteoarthritis on
absenteeism among American workers. It was found that approximately 0.8% of women and 0.3% of
men had osteoarthritis. Compared to other conditions like anxiety disorder, asthma, or diabetes more work days were missed due to osteoarthritis. Osteoarthritis increased the chances of missing work by 90% in women and 65% in men. Missed work days accounted for average per capita absenteeism costs of $469 for women and $520 for men. This amounts equals about three days’ worth of work for men and women. If the above numbers are considered on a national scale it would cost the United States about $10.3 billion per year worth of absenteeism costs. This amounts to $5.5 billion for women and $4.8 billion for men.
