Research links workplace bullying with ill-healthA new study by the University of
Sheffield has uncovered new evidence of a strong link between workplace bullying and the subsequent psychological ill-health
of employees.
The University of Sheffield carried out a study which was funded by the Institution of Occupational Safety
and Health. The study involved studying the effects of bullying on health. The study took place from 2008 to 2009, 3 652 employees participated in the first part of the study and 2 029 employees in the second part of the study. The study shows that bullying from organizational insiders like colleagues, subordinates and superiors, has an effect on stress levels. Approximately 39% of employees in the study reported frequent (either weekly or daily) bullying from colleagues, subordinates or superiors in the previous six months. Results show that the most employees stated bullying behavior came from people inside the organization and this impacted employees’ health the most. Employees protected themselves from the negative health effects of bullying with higher levels of personal optimism and self-esteem and lower workloads. Despite organizational policies and procedures, it still remains difficult to combat bullying. The results from the study show that a successful workplace intervention to deal with bullying may involve boosting employee self-esteem.
